Guided Fly Fishing Trips

Steelhead

When:
October 15 - December 15
March 15 - May 15

These dates can vary based on conditions for the given year.  The Fall season ends when the rivers lock-up with ice.  The Spring season starts after ice-out and will end when the weather warms the water to the point that the steelhead drop back to the lake.

There have been Winters when the larger tributaries do not freeze over.  If you are interested in a Winter trip give me a call.  Catching steelhead in the Winter is much slower than in the Fall and Spring, but it is a great time to enjoy the rivers. There are few experiences more breathtaking than fishing the deep jade winter runs of the Lake Erie tributaries in the snow. Cold weather steelhead are a bit picky and tend not to move far for their meals.  So, when you catch a steelhead in the cold, you have done a great job of putting your offering right on their nose.  The fight of the steelhead is not as powerful in the cold, but the satisfaction is great.  If you land a steelhead in these conditions, you have put it all together and done it right.

**I encourage catch and release fishing.  Although I cannot stop you from keeping your daily limit of steelhead, if you want to keep fish, you will be responsible for transporting them throughout the day.

Where:  From the Vermilion River in Ohio to 20 Mile Creek in Pennsylvania.  Most often, the conditions will dictate where we fish.  I will try to put you on the water with the best conditions for the day you choose.

**Reminder: I only guide fly fishing trips for steelhead.

What to Bring:  Fishing License, Waders & Wading Boots (I recommend chest waders, but I'll do my best to keep you out of deep water), Wading Staff, Polarized Sunglasses, Layered Clothing & Rain Gear.  You can bring your own fly fishing gear if you have it.  I recommend 7wt or 8wt fly rods with the appropriate reel and weight forward floating line.

You can expect that we will plan to be on the water at sun-up.  I will stay in close contact with you
during the days leading up to your trip.  We will decide a day or so before your trip where we will plan to meet and fish based on the river conditions at that time.

If you have special requests, let me know.  If you are interested in fishing larger water or smaller creeks in particular, I will do my best to accommodate you.  If there is a specific tributary you are interested in fishing, I will do my best to get you there.

Brown Trout (with Streamers!)

Where:  Mad River

When: Year Round!

The Mad runs cool all year long.  Sure we can fish nymphs, dries, and terrestrials on the Mad, but if you want a true thrill…you sling streamers.  It's knowing how, when, and where to throw those streamers that matters.   This is a day of instruction and fishing.  We'll work on identifying when and where to throw those streamers and how to cast those big streamers all day long in various conditions and tight situations.  You'll be able to take this knowledge and make it work on just about any brown trout stream out there.

**All brown trout trips involve wading in the river and walking moderate distances. You must be capable of wading in rocky unstable rivers with moderate flows and be in good physical condition to safely walk from 1-3 miles over the course of a day.

Smallmouth Bass

Where: Lake Erie Tributaries, Hocking River

When: April - September

Lake run smallmouth bass enter the Lake Erie tributaries in mid April and spawn through early June. This is a time when you have a chance at a 4-5lb smallie on every cast.  As Spring leads to Summer, resident smallmouth bass continue to be active in the rivers.  We chase smallies with swung streamers, stripped streamers, and top water flies.  If you have never been shaken by a bruiser smallmouth bass on the fly...it's time!
